A fortitous lunch

05 Feb

Over the weekend I was doing some analysis of a particular company and analysis usually means plowing through anywhere between the last 5 to 10 years annual report.

As I started to read and get a sense of the evolution of this company I became intrigued with its leadership. The CEO has grown revenue – now a shade below a billion ringgits, improved profitability, from 14% to 18% of revenue, created a cash pile that if distributed to shareholders in year 2000 the shareholders would have got about 60 sen per share and in 2005 they would have got RM1.20 per share.

I was very intrigued and the question in my mind was what did he do and how did he do it, after all I don’t see his name blaring in the papers to being trumpeted as the salvation of the country like a number of other CEOs.

Lo and behold, I cross him in the car park this morning and a quick call to his office got me a lunch appointment. It was an enjoyable lunch, for me at least, as I got to hear first hand, from the horses mouth, directly from a CEO who has quietly delivered results for not 1, not 2 but 5 consecutive years.

What struck me was the humility and simplicity that this CEO took in going about his work. He said, you need a plan, you need numbers to support the plan then you need people to believe in the plan and the numbers and finally GOD will take care of the rest. Amazing what the combination of simplicity and humility can do.

What we now need are a few more like him ……
