No business like show business….

27 May

This was taken from The Star 26.05.07 and it is worth studying for a moment as it gives a good example of how we can make conceptual leaps of faith and if readers are not careful they will fall for it hook, line and sinker.

This is the quote made by Telekom’s CEO – Datuk Wahid:

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) and Maxis Communications Bhd were jointly awarded the Service Provider of the Year Award at the 2007 Frost & Sullivan Malaysia Telecoms Awards.

TM also received the 2007 Data Communications Service Provider of the Year and 2007 Broadband Service Provider of the Year awards.

Datuk Abdul Wahid Omar

TM chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Wahid Omar said the awards were more meaningful considering the competitive landscape that TM was operating in.

“The awards remind us how far we have come, from our humble beginnings to one of Asia’s leading communication players,” he said in a statement (bold and italics is mine to emphasize the point)

If we read the title of the award : Service Provider of the Year Award at the 2007 Frost & Sullivan Malaysia Telecoms Awards and contrast is to the bold & italic statement above, there is nothing in the award to even remotely suggest that TM has made an progress in the context of Asia. And this is further reaffirmed by the next paragraph of the article that says:

The Data Communications Service Provider of the Year award was given to the service provider that demonstrate exemplary growth and performance in the Wide Area Network (WAN) data communications segments of 2006.

The awards, held for the third consecutive year, also evaluated telecommunications and information and communications technology companies in Malaysia on various criteria including market performance, market share and average revenue per user.

So this is clearly a Malaysian award which Wahid has cleverly spinned to make the most out of.

Anyway well done to Wahid for winning the Award and good job of creating the HALO effect…… Like they say, there is no business like show business and I  think the Proton boys can learn a thing or two form you.

p.s. Can you now do away with the RM29 extortionist phone rental that you charge us every month. BTW RM29 per month x 12 months x 30 years = RM 10,440 That is how much I will pay TM for something that has a street value of maybe Rm100.!
